Prioritising Mental Health Needs of Nigerians in a Depressed Economy: An Urgent Call for Integrated, Comprehensive, and Sustainable Interventions

Yesterday, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa’s Kwara Team proudly participated in the 55th Annual General and Scientific Meeting of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria. During the event, HE Toyin Saraki’s goodwill message was delivered by our National Programs Manager Mr. Kehinde Akinsola, underscoring our unwavering commitment to advancing mental health as a cornerstone of national development. We commend Professor Taiwo Obindo, President of the Association, for his exemplary leadership in convening this pivotal gathering, addressing the critical theme: “Prioritising Mental Health Needs of Nigerians in a Depressed Economy: An Urgent Call for Integrated, Comprehensive, and Sustainable Interventions.”

At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we remain dedicated to championing innovative, equitable, and multidimensional strategies to address and destigmatise the mental health crisis in Nigeria. We have consistently advocated for the integration of mental health services into general hospital and community psychiatry frameworks to ensure care that is accessible, inclusive, and culturally sensitive. Additionally, we continue to leverage digital health solutions to overcome challenges related to infrastructure and digital literacy, thereby extending the reach and impact of mental health interventions across diverse populations.

Looking ahead, we emphasize the importance of fostering partnerships that strengthen frontline care and taking decisive action to make mental health care not a privilege but a guaranteed right for all. We extend our gratitude to everyone involved in this meeting for their steadfast dedication to advancing solutions that empower individuals, families, and communities to thrive in every aspect of their wellbeing.
