About Alaafia Kwara
Alaafia Kwara – A Wellbeing Foundation Africa Initiative established to promote and positively impact the health and wellbeing of women and children, families and communities in Kwara State.
The Alaafia Kwara Initiative was established by Her Excellency Toyin Ojora Saraki in 2004, as First Lady of Kwara State 2003 – 2011, to engender and empower key strategies and solutions towards achieving progress in the key measurable indices set out by the 2015 Millennium Development Goals.
Our program interventions and initiatives continue to be guided by the targets of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Flagship Intervention
The Personal Health Record
The Personal Health Record transforms the life chances of every mother and child by making verifiable data on the health and
welfare of the pregnant mother and her baby up until age five. It is a vital tool to empower mothers, educate carers and enable
professionals to provide the best possible care for babies and children.
Based on WHO guidance and best practice from around the world, the PHR records ante and post natal details
of the mother and charts to growth and development of the child. It also provides vital guidance on preventing and treating
malaria, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses and promotes and records vaccinations.
The Personal Health Record captures the baseline medical history of the mother including details of prior
pregnancies and any previous stillbirths, neonatal or child deaths.

On this World Malaria Day 2025, we stand united under the global theme: “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite.”
According to @WHO World malaria report 2024, the African Region bore the brunt of the global malaria burden, accounting for a staggering 95% of all cases. Nigeria alone represented 40% of estimated malaria cases and 46% of deaths within the High Burden to High Impact (HBHI) countries, with an increase of 6.8 million estimated cases between 2019 and 2023. These figures represent families, and communities grappling with a preventable disease.
At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we recognize that ending malaria is a medical mission as well as an investment in our shared future.
With our MamaCare360 program, our Midwives and Nurse Educators equip pregnant women and new mothers with improved knowledge on malaria prevention and protection for themselves and their newborns. We address the unique vulnerabilities of mothers and infants, ensuring they understand the symptoms, treatment options, and the importance of prevention.
Additionally, our WASH intervention through the @Dettolnigeria Hygiene Quest program sponsored by our social impact partner @thisisreckitt is empowering communities across Nigeria. In schools, health facilities, and local communities, our Nurse Educators teach individuals how simple acts like eliminating stagnant water, maintaining clean environments, and proper waste disposal can drastically reduce the risk of malaria transmission and fostering a culture of hygiene.
As we commemorate #WorldMalariaDay we must reinvest in proven solutions, reimagine our strategies to overcome emerging challenges like climate change and conflict, and reignite the global and local momentum needed to accelerate progress that ends malaria.

This #WorldImmunizationWeek (April 24–30, 2025), the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (#WBFA) proudly aligns with the global call to action under the theme “Immunisation for All is Humanly Possible.”
Immunization remains one of the most effective and cost-efficient public health measures, saving millions of lives each year by preventing illness and disability while contributing to healthier, more resilient communities.
Vaccines do more than just protect individuals from infectious diseases; they also play help in lowering healthcare costs, increasing productivity, and promoting economic stability.
At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we’re dedicated to improving maternal, newborn, and child health (#MNCH) through our #Mamacare360 Antenatal and Postnatal program. We strive to educate mothers, parents, and caregivers about the importance of vaccinations. Our programs amongst other things, tackle vaccine hesitancy and promote health equity.
As part of our broader commitment to Universal Health Coverage (#UHC), we firmly believe that everyone, everywhere should have access to life-saving vaccines. Through policy advocacy, support for health systems, and community engagement, we are dedicated to achieving universal immunization.

Every community deserves access to clean water, safe sanitation, and proper hygiene not as a privilege, but as a fundamental human right. At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, our commitment to WASH goes beyond advocacy it’s a life-saving mission.
Through the @DettolNigeria Hygiene Quest sessions, we are not just raising awareness; we are changing behaviors, shaping habits, and strengthening communities with hygiene knowledge. Our Nurse Educators equip families with the knowledge and skills to make hygiene second nature — showing how something as simple as handwashing with soap can be a powerful shield against disease, and a step toward preserving dignity.
Through these engagements we are building a foundation where every household has the knowledge, the tools, and the motivation to make hygiene a daily habit.

Handwashing remains one of the most fundamental and sustainable health practices, delivering immense benefits both in the immediate and long term. It serves as a primary defense in preventing the spread of diseases, significantly reducing the risk of gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.
Children, in particular, are highly susceptible to infections due to frequent exposure within indoor environments, close interactions with peers, and their natural curiosity which often leads to hand-to-mouth contact. Despite its critical importance, handwashing is often overlooked or regarded as a routine, insignificant habit. In many educational settings, it is assumed that children already possess proper hand hygiene habits, with little emphasis placed on reinforcing or teaching this essential practice.
Through the @dettolnigeria Hygiene Quest sessions, our Nurse Educators engage directly with school children teaching proper methods for hand washing and instilling vital hygiene behaviors early in life. These formative years present the best opportunity to cultivate lasting habits, as it is far more effective to establish positive behavior than to attempt to correct unhealthy ones later on.

In Nigeria, nearly 1 in 5 women experience significant mental health challenges such as postpartum depression and anxiety following childbirth which in many cases go undiagnosed. This can make it difficult for mothers to bond with their babies, affecting both their well-being and their child’s early development.
At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we recognize that maternal care is not only physical, but emotional and psychological. Through our Mamacare360 classes, our Midwives provide safe spaces for mothers to learn, share, and heal. We teach them how to recognize the signs of postpartum stress, anxiety, or depression such as persistent sadness, feelings of disconnection, and overwhelming fatigue and we equip mothers with effective coping strategies that include breathing techniques, healthy routines, peer support, and where necessary, referrals for professional mental health care.
By addressing these issues early, we empower mothers to build stronger emotional connections with their babies and foster a more joyful start to their motherhood journey.

At our MamaCare360 postnatal (#PNC) classes, we are committed to delivering care that aligns with the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for Postnatal Care for Mothers and Newborns. Our midwives provide mothers with comprehensive education on essential newborn care, ensuring that both mother and baby are closely supported during one of the most vulnerable periods of life.
The postnatal period following childbirth is a critical phase that significantly influences long-term health outcomes for both mother and child. Most maternal and newborn deaths occur within the first month after birth, with nearly half of all postnatal maternal deaths taking place within the first 24 hours. This is why @WHO recommends at least four postnatal checkups within the first six weeks of life.
During our sessions, mothers are empowered with the knowledge to recognize danger signs in their newborns and the importance of seeking immediate care when needed. Each postnatal contact involves careful assessment of newborn well-being. Any signs such as poor feeding, convulsions, rapid breathing, chest in-drawing, lethargy, abnormal temperature (fever or hypothermia), or signs of jaundice especially within the first 24 hours require urgent medical attention.
Through MamaCare360, we are shaping healthier futures by equipping mothers with the tools and knowledge to protect and nurture their newborns from the very start.

Breastmilk is often described as nature’s first vaccine, offering the perfect balance of nutrients and antibodies essential for a newborn’s growth and immune development, especially for babies receiving care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). For mothers whose babies are born prematurely or require specialized care, establishing and maintaining lactation can be both emotionally and physically challenging. In such circumstances, the breast pump becomes an invaluable tool that aids in providing nourishment through expressed breastmilk.
During our recent Mamacare NICUPlus session, our WBFA Midwife engaged mothers with practical guidance on the proper use of breast pumps, emphasizing their critical role in supporting lactation, stimulating milk production, and ensuring that newborns in the NICU receive the protective benefits of breastmilk even when direct breastfeeding may not yet be possible. The session underscored how breast pumping empowers mothers to initiate and sustain breastfeeding while also reducing the risk of complications such as engorgement or mastitis.
By educating mothers on breast pump hygiene, storage techniques, and optimal expression practices, we are ensuring that mothers are well-equipped to care for their babies with confidence, compassion, and continuity.
