About Alaafia Kwara

Alaafia Kwara – A Wellbeing Foundation Africa Initiative established to promote and positively impact the health and wellbeing of women and children, families and communities in Kwara State.

The Alaafia Kwara Initiative was established by Her Excellency Toyin Ojora Saraki in 2004, as First Lady of Kwara State 2003 – 2011, to engender and empower key strategies and solutions towards achieving progress in the key measurable indices set out by the 2015 Millennium Development Goals.

Our program interventions and initiatives continue to be guided by the targets of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Our Flagship Intervention

The Personal Health Record

The Personal Health Record transforms the life chances of every mother and child by making verifiable data on the health and
welfare of the pregnant mother and her baby up until age five. It is a vital tool to empower mothers, educate carers and enable
professionals to provide the best possible care for babies and children.

Based on WHO guidance and best practice from around the world, the PHR records ante and post natal details
of the mother and charts to growth and development of the child. It also provides vital guidance on preventing and treating
malaria, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses and promotes and records vaccinations.

The Personal Health Record captures the baseline medical history of the mother including details of prior
pregnancies and any previous stillbirths, neonatal or child deaths.

On this World Malaria Day 2025, we stand united under the global theme: “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite.”

According to @WHO World malaria report 2024, the African Region bore the brunt of the global malaria burden, accounting for a staggering 95% of all cases. Nigeria alone represented 40% of estimated malaria cases and 46% of deaths within the High Burden to High Impact (HBHI) countries, with an increase of 6.8 million estimated cases between 2019 and 2023. These figures represent families, and communities grappling with a preventable disease.

At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we recognize that ending malaria is a medical mission as well as an investment in our shared future.

With our MamaCare360 program, our Midwives and Nurse Educators equip pregnant women and new mothers with improved knowledge on malaria prevention and protection for themselves and their newborns. We address the unique vulnerabilities of mothers and infants, ensuring they understand the symptoms, treatment options, and the importance of prevention.

Additionally, our WASH intervention through the @Dettolnigeria Hygiene Quest program sponsored by our social impact partner @thisisreckitt is empowering communities across Nigeria. In schools, health facilities, and local communities, our Nurse Educators teach individuals how simple acts like eliminating stagnant water, maintaining clean environments, and proper waste disposal can drastically reduce the risk of malaria transmission and fostering a culture of hygiene.

As we commemorate #WorldMalariaDay we must reinvest in proven solutions, reimagine our strategies to overcome emerging challenges like climate change and conflict, and reignite the global and local momentum needed to accelerate progress that ends malaria.

This #WorldImmunizationWeek (April 24–30, 2025), the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (#WBFA) proudly aligns with the global call to action under the theme “Immunisation for All is Humanly Possible.”

Immunization remains one of the most effective and cost-efficient public health measures, saving millions of lives each year by preventing illness and disability while contributing to healthier, more resilient communities.

Vaccines do more than just protect individuals from infectious diseases; they also play help in lowering healthcare costs, increasing productivity, and promoting economic stability.

At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we’re dedicated to improving maternal, newborn, and child health (#MNCH) through our #Mamacare360 Antenatal and Postnatal program. We strive to educate mothers, parents, and caregivers about the importance of vaccinations. Our programs amongst other things, tackle vaccine hesitancy and promote health equity.

As part of our broader commitment to Universal Health Coverage (#UHC), we firmly believe that everyone, everywhere should have access to life-saving vaccines. Through policy advocacy, support for health systems, and community engagement, we are dedicated to achieving universal immunization.
