Disaster Response &
Relief
Actions to care for, and rebuild the lives of, those
affected by disasters
ABOUT THIS CAMPAIGN
What we’ve done
Not only do Alaafia Kwara members respond personally in cases of urgent need with a helping hand and a listening ear, but we also make every attempt to prepare our communities with proper strategies for disaster response and relief.
Alaafia Kwara Community Accident and Trauma Readiness Workshops
Alaafia Kwara trains communities on appropriate action in emergencies and in the prevention of fires.
Alaafia Kwara Adura Group
This is a multi-denominational unit that provides faith-based counselling and support throughout Kwaran communities in times of need and grief, with a particular emphasis on bereavement for widows.
Rapid Response Team
We also maintain a standing response team for disaster victims. A few of the interventions and beneficiaries in this area include:
- Jamiu Issa, whose eyes were gouged out by assailants in 2005, has been treated, rehabilitated and is now receiving a formal education at Kwara State School for Special Needs
- Folasade Suleiman, a young deaf and dumb lady abandoned and then rescued, has completed her AK-sponsored vocational education as a fashion designer and tailor, and has also been assisted in establishing her own business, as well as being reunited with her parents
- Alake, a deaf and dumb child who’d been abandoned, was found and cared for by us at the Children’s Reception Centre, Ilorin, and was then enrolled at Kwara State School for Special Needs, where she makes good progress; the search for her parents continues
- Donations to burns victims including a whole family receive constant support
- Donation of mattresses, bedding materials, clothing and emergency living allowances to 1000 ASA River flood victims
- Improved welfare provisions for inmates of correctional and other institutions such as leprosaria and mental health institutions
- Donation to the World Food Programme
