On July 7th, 2025, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), represented by its National Programs Lead, Mr. Kehinde Akinsola, on behalf of Her Excellency Mrs. Toyin Ojora Saraki, participated in the 10th Edition of the Maslaha Journal Public Presentation and the 2nd Scholars’ Debate hosted by the National Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) at the University of Ilorin. This was a convergence of brilliant minds committed to justice, equity, and scholarship that honoured the lifelong service of the Grand Khadi of Kwara State, Honourable Justice Abdul-Lateef Kamaldeen Al-Adaby.

Held at the historic Old Moot Court, the event was themed “Sacred Law in a Changing World: Islamic Law and the Pursuit of Equitable Access to Justice.” It brought together scholars, legal practitioners, and students to engage in meaningful discourse on the evolving relevance of Islamic jurisprudence in today’s complex legal landscape.

A key highlight of the program was the special recognition of Honourable Justice Abdul-Lateef Kamaldeen Al-Adaby for his enduring contributions to legal scholarship and the Islamic legal tradition. His keynote address was both inspiring and profound, reminding participants that the gathering was not only a celebration of an individual but a call to uphold enduring values—justice, integrity, and service.
Justice Al-Adaby emphasised that excellence is not accidental, but the product of faith, discipline, and consistent effort. He encouraged all aspiring legal professionals to lead lives grounded in knowledge and justice within courtrooms, classrooms, and their wider communities.
The event also saw the official launch of the Maslaha Journal, a publication that continues to play a pivotal role in the academic development of Islamic legal thought. Having actively supported Moot Court Competitions at state and national levels through the WBFA Alaafia Kwara Initiative’s Toyin Saraki & Liberty Chambers Moot Court Competition historically, Her Excellency Toyin Ojora Saraki support this vital academic initiative in modern times with a token fiscal contribution towards the continued growth of the Maslaha Journal, a beacon of Islamic legal thought and a platform for informed youth engagement.
Adding a dynamic edge to the occasion, three teams from the Department of Islamic Law took part in a stimulating debate on the topic: “AI Imprisonment and Predictive Policing.” The contest challenged students to explore the intersection between technology and legal ethics, raising critical questions about justice, surveillance, and the future of law.
Awards and cash prizes were presented to all six debaters, with special honours given to the top three individual performers and the best overall team. The day concluded with a shared hope for the Maslaha Journal to continue growing in reach and relevance, as a lasting contribution to knowledge, peace, and justice.
WBFA is proud to support initiatives that inspire thought leadership and advance justice, and we look forward to further collaborations that empower the next generation of ethical legal minds.
